** (File Name D_GM.TXT, Documentation for D_GM.EXE)
** Version date 12/7/1993
** D_GM.EXE is a self extracting file which contains:
D_GM.MID (GM setup file)
D_R_BRSH.MID (GM rhythm setup file)
D_R_ELEC.MID (GM rhythm setup file)
D_R_STND.MID (GM rhythm setup)
D_R_ORCH.MID (GM rhythm setup)
Each of the *.MID files is a Standard MIDI File (SMF) with
System Exclusive (SysEX) Data for the Roland D-Series and
compatible synthesizers (D-5, D-10, D-110, D-20).
Each setup file changes the sounds in a D-Series unit
(or compatible) to make it more compatible with the Roland
GM format for synthesizers.
These files should be playable with any MIDI sequencer
(or file player) that reads SMF and can transmit SysEx data
that is in the SMF format. Media Player in Windows can also
be used for this task.
D_GM.MID is the basic setup file with 64 new sounds and
a new patchmap. This is also the General MIDI file.
The D_R_*.MID setup files are alternate drum sets
which correspond to some of the GM Format sets.
D_R_STND.MID is the General MIDI Standard Drum Kit.
D_R_BRSH.MID is the General MIDI Brush Drum Kit.
D_R_ORCH.MID is the General MIDI Orchestral Drum Kit.
D_R_ELEC.MID is the General MIDI Electronic Drum Kit.
Type "D_GM" at the command line to uncompact this archive.

** Why these files are needed
There are hundreds of Standard MIDI File songs arranged for
the D-Series units and compatible products. During playback,
each song selects the instrument sounds it needs from a set
of factory presets in the D-Series unit.
Each preset sound has a corresponding "program number",
which is used to identify that sound in a song file.
The list of sounds and their program numbers is called
a "patchmap".
Recent efforts at standardizing synthesizer presets
(General MIDI) have created a different patchmap,
which also includes sounds not available on D-Series
Units.
To play these new GM songs on any D-Series product
requires changing the program numbers so that the proper
sounds are selected. For example, #69 on the D-Series
product is Sound Track, but is an Oboe in General MIDI
Format.
Remapping these program numbers is the minimum for
reasonable playback, and does not address the issue of
new sounds which are not available in the D-Series
and compatible products.
To achieve the most accurate General MIDI playback
possible on the D-Series products requires actually creating
new sounds that correspond to those in the new standard.
For example, there are new lead guitar sounds
(distortion and overdrive) in the General MIDI format,
but these sounds are not part of the D-Series presets.
The D_GM setup file includes new sounds that are not exactly
the same as GM sounds, but will work in most cases.
Of the 128 presets, 64 are new or modified sounds,
which is the technical limit of possible variations
on the D-Series. Changes are also made on the Drum Section
(Channel 10) to add additional sounds on keys not normally
used in D-Series Products.
The 12/7/1993 version sets the LA partial reserve and default
Channels to better match GM. The settings are as below:
D-Series receive Channels: 1-8, 10
LA Partial Reserve CHAN PARTIALS
1 8
2 4
3 4
4 4
5 3
6 3
7 2
8 2
10 2
The D_R_*.MID files each address just the drum (rhythm)
section of D-Series products. There is a setup for GM
Orchestra, GM Brush, GM Electronic plus the GM standard kit.
